Terms of Endearment (1983)

Directed by James L. Brooks

Starring Shirley MacLaine, Debra Winger, Jack Nicholson, Jeff Daniels, John Lithgow, Danny DeVito, Lisa Hart Carroll, , Betty King, Huckleberry Fox, Troy Bishop, Shane Serwin, and Megan Morris

I haven't cried at too many "tearjerkers." I cried at this one. A lot of it has to do with that damn kid crying as his mother lays in a hospital bed, dying of cancer. The look on that kid's face is just so sad, I lost it. All in all, this is one of the better Best Picture winners from the 80s. There are great performances all around, especially from the two female leads. Brooks captures a great family story over the years, and manages to make a film that is hilarious and heartbreaking at the same time. Bring the tissues.

Other nominees: The Big Chill (Lawrence Kasdan), The Dresser (Peter Yates), The Right Stuff (Philip Kaufman), and Tender Mercies (Bruce Beresford)
