Starring Dustin Hoffman, Justin Henry, Meryl Streep, Jane Alexander, Howard Duff, George Coe, and JoBeth Williams
Proof that a movie does not have to be a sweeping epic with an astrological budget to be great, Kramer vs. Kramer depicts the American family with the best of them. Dustin Hoffman is as good as he has ever been as the workaholic who suddenly becomes a single father when his wife leaves him to find herself. Meryl Streep also gives one of her best early performances as that wife who eventually wants to regain custody of the boy. Also notable is Justin Henry as their son, who gives a performance that transcends all expectations one normally has for children.
Other nominees: All That Jazz (Bob Fosse), Apocalypse Now (Francis Ford Coppola), Breaking Away (Peter Yates), and Norma Rae (Martin Ritt)
