Ordinary People (1980)

Directed by Robert Redford

Starring Timothy Hutton, Mary Tyler Moore, Donald Sutherland, Judd Hirsch, Elizabeth McGovern, Dinah Manoff, M. Emmet Walsh, Fredric Lehne, James Sikking, Basil Hoffman, and Adam Baldwin

Like Shakespeare in Love eighteen years later, this movie has a bad reputation simply because it beat an all-time classic for this award. In this case, the classic was Raging Bull, and it's true that Martin Scorsese's boxing epic is the better film. For what it's worth, however, this is a very well acted and finely crafted film in it's own right. Hutton, Moore, Sutherland, and Hirsch all turn in the best performances of their careers. Hutton, in what really was a lead performance, won a well-deserved Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. It still baffles me that Donald Sutherland did not even recieve a nomination for his sensitive portrayal of Hutton's father. Sure, it's not Raging Bull, but it's still a darn good movie.

Other nominees: Coal Miner's Daughter (Michael Apted), The Elephant Man (David Lynch), Raging Bull (Martin Scorsese), and Tess (Roman Polanski)
