As epic a biopic as there ever was one, Attenborough's film explores the entire adult life of one of history's most influential men. Gandhi has become a larger than life, almost superhuman figure, so this movie was an interesting look at a man who was a human being like any other, despite his extraordinary accomplishments. Attenborough assembles a cast of some of the most respected actors of both British and Indian descent, but they are all overshadowed by Kingsley as the title character. He is immensely believable as Gandhi at every stage of the man's life. Despite it's lenghty running time, Gandhi manages to remain an enjoyable film from start to finish.
Other nominees: E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (Steven Spielberg), Missing (Costa-Gavras), Tootsie (Sydney Pollack), and The Verdict (Sidney Lumet)
